Sauté chopped onion in shortening. Add cabbage and seasonings. Cover and fry over low heat until tender.

Grate potatoes. Add egg, seasonings, and flour. If dough is stiff, add a little water. Drop by 1/2 teaspoon into boiling water. Boil until dumplings come to top, about 10 minutes. Drain and rinse with warm water. Mix with cabbage mixture.
