Instructions

  1. Add sugar and shortening to mixing bowl and cream until smooth, add eggs and mix until combined.

  2. In a separate bowl combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.  Add flour mixture to mixing bowl and mix until combined.  Chill dough in refrigerator until ready to bake.

  3. Preheat oven to 400ᵒF.

  4. Remove chilled dough from refrigerator and roll into balls the size of walnuts.  Roll balls in the mixture of sugar and cinnamon.  Place coated balls on baking sheet allowing space between to allow balls to spread.  Bake at 400ᵒF for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned.  Remove from baking sheet and place on wire racks to cool.

    Lady Wayfarer's mother had her own recipe (I couldn't locate it today), and the main difference is the use of crushed candy canes instead of cinnamon sugar.
